Out with the Can Light & In With the French Farmhouse Light

Hallway Can Light- From My Front Porch To Yours
This is the hallway between our kitchen and our dining room. I have slowly been updating it. Three years ago I added the wood toppers to all the doors for some rustic farmhouse charm. Earlier this year I painted our command central door Rainwashed by Sherwin Williams and then painted the insets of the doors. All super easy things I was able to do on my own. The one thing I desperately wanted to do though required some outside help. I wanted to get rid of the one single can light.

I had been longing for this light fixture ever since I saw it in my friend Brenda's home. When I finally got around to buying it Lowes no longer carried it. Well to my delight they decided to bring it back and The Nana & The Papa bought it for me. A certain somebody may or may not be turning 40 this week!;0 They are out here spending Spring Break with us and Papa kindly swapped out the can light. I wish I could say I have a tutorial for that but honestly I did not have the heart to ask him to show me each and every step and take pics. Besides while he was working on taking the can light out I was outside making over the new light.

Yes, you read that correctly. I went outside and made over a perfectly beautiful brand new light fixture. Though I loved it as it was I wanted it to have a similar finish like our chandler in the dining room

It was a pretty simple finish to replicate. First I lightly sprayed everything using Rust-Oleum spray paint in Flat Chestnut.

I did not want full on coverage. I was after dimension in color.

Up next I used my trusty chalk paint.

I dried brushed a little of Old White and Old Ochre on. After that I wiped some of it away.

After I wiped some of it off I then applied some gold touches. I did a little more wiping off with a paper towel. I wiped off in a circular motion.

This is the final finish I came up with.

Here it is the new light in all of its glory in the hallway. It was so hard to get a good picture so that I could show y'all how magical and beautiful it looks. I am not a pro with the camera so I had issues with the glare.

It makes the prettiest shadows down the hallway.

I decided to take a pic of it at night with the flash to see if I could get a better pic. If you look closely you can see my assistant down at the end of the hallway watching me.

Mr. Front Porch thinks the light is a tad much for the space because it is full of sparkle but I think it totally makes the space. Next up I want to install beadboard down the hallway and eventually talk Mr. Front Porch into starting to plank the ceiling but that is going to be a hard sell. Wish me luck!;)

  8. Ooooh, it's beautiful, Pamela! I love it! I'd love to do something like this for the ceiling mount lights in our laundry and pantry area (which are right next to each other really). Each area has a different light fixture. How is the lighting from this fixture? Since the area I'd like to change is the window-less side of the condo, I need all the artificial light I can get!

    Happy Birthday! : )

  9. I think a plank ceiling for a 40th birthday is exactly what a girl needs as a present.
