DIY Landscaping for Curb Appeal

Hey y'all! I promise I am still here. I know it has been awhile.

We took a late vacation. Normally we go at the beginning of the summer but this year it was at the very tail end. As soon as we got back it was time to get ready for back to school. We have spent the last month getting use to waking up before 6 a.m. for High School. Ugh! I will say though for the most part it is breaking me of my night owl hours. I have only had one night where I couldn't go to sleep.

This week I have started bringing out the pumpkins for fall and then I remembered as I was dismantling the porch decor that I hadn't shared what I had been up to outside.

Remember back at the end of May when I ripped out our front flower beds and I planted 8 of these beautiful Gardenias? You can see what the beds looked like if you missed it by clicking here.

I tell ya I fought hard all summer long to keep those darn plants alive. As you can see I lost the battle.

I was so disappointed but I guess that is how it goes sometimes. I certainly have no clue what I am doing.

While trying to save the Gardenias I added some spiral shrubs to each side of the entryway. I had been wanting to add some for some time now.

Once I decided to throw in the towel on the Gardenias we went to the nursery and I picked out some Hawthorns and Cypress. I planted Hawthorns at the last house and they did very well so I figured they should here as well.

I am so much happier with how it all came together and I am actually glad the gardenias didn't survive.

Now everything looks as if there was somebody who knew what they were doing. Sometimes I hit a home run when I just wing it. LOL.

The spiral shrubs really steal the show I think. Mr. Front Porch was afraid they would be a pain to upkeep but so far they have been a breeze. Only once have I gone out and trimmed a few stray branches.

The new plants have been in for over a month now, the spiral shrubs for over 2 months and I am happy to say they are still happy! Once it cools off we plan on adding rock around the beds and I want to plant some flowers to add color. I am also contemplating adding some boxwoods down each side of the walk way but not sure about that yet.

On another note I just completed the curbside chairs so I can take pics of our fall dining room. It is the only space I think I have fully cozied up for fall so far.

Have you started pulling out your pumpkins yet or is it still too hot?

  3. Your landscaping looks beautiful! Sometimes we have to make a misstep before we find exactly what works and looks good. The spiral shrubs really add interest...I wish now I had looked at something like that for the corner of the garage.

    1. Hi Edna. Thanks for stopping by. I purchased them from Costco back in the spring. They came two to a set, a large one and then a smaller one.

    1. Hi Michelle G. Thanks for visiting. I just used a screw since I usually have something hanging right there. With hardiplank I had to use a pilot drill hole to enable the screw t get started. That hardiplank is tough stuff.
