Inexpensive DIY Wainscoting

Today I was able to finish fixing up the bead board wallpaper snafu from last week.
The wallpaper was a great idea since I already had it on hand but it went way wrong. If you missed that post you can see it here.
Over the weekend we were at HomeDepot looking around and I decided to bring home some 3x4 1/4 inch thick pine boards to create real Wainscoting in the guest hallway. They were $2.75 each and I used 4 of them so it was an inexpensive fix at just $11 plus tax.
I was fearful of how the wallpaper would behave.
Thankfully it all came down without a fight.
It took 5 coats of white paint but it was well worth it.
The barn wood topper is wood that I had on hand out in the garage that Littliest and I actually saved from the neighbors trash back in the winter. They must have been fixing their fence because there were three stacks of the wood and I knew I would eventually find a use for it. It already had a grey tint to it from being outside for several years but I did dry brush some white paint on it and some stain to make it look a bit more aged.

Here is the new light. I actually had this boxed up and on my website but nobody was wanting just one. They all wanted a pair so I decided to keep it for myself!;)

Tex also came in  to play with the hallway make over. He had been sitting on our kitchen counter for months just waiting for a home.
The Hubster suggested that he should go above the arch into the guest hallway.
The little table got a makeover as well with some Old Ochre. I adore the little alphabet stamps I found at Michaels not too long ago.
It is amazing how little changes can make such a big impact! Now I can not wait to do the hallway into our master. If you want to see just how far this little hallway has come since we first bought our home 4 years ago you can click here.

  15. Loving your new little area. I've never been a wallpaper fan, myself. I think I change my mind too often and what a mess it leaves behind!

  18. LOVE IT, PAMELA!!! It looks fantastic! That wainscoting wall paper is good in theory (as is all the other textured wall paper), but it just doesn't hold up. The buffet that I wallpapered the drawers on has been sitting in the shop for over a year because our cat decided to sharpen her claws on the front of one of the drawers. LOL! I am absolutely loving the new look! It's wonderful!!

  22. Love it! I thought the before was nice, but the after is perfect-so much character added! I've used the beadboard wallpaper in the back of some cupboards. It worked well there, but I didn't find it all that easy to work with.

  28. Your little hallway is so perfect now. It looked great before, but the wainscot and the weathered wood above the chair rail and the door casing make it perfection! Love the little plant stand too.
