Farmhouse Garage Door Makeover

I can not believe that it is May already! What is even harder to believe is that we have been in our new home for 6 months.   We have been busy turning our new house into our home which involves a lot of DIY projects. One of those DIY projects involves our garage.

A detached garage was a must have for Mr. Front Porch since were building. I love how charming it looks with the three windows up top! I have gotten many questions about what is  up with the two story garage and I will share about that at the end of this post. I snapped this pic of our garage a few days before closing. Though I loved our garage I knew it had more potential.

The builder had added the handles to the garage doors and then I ordered the rest of the carriage house hardware from Ebay. I did this at our last home as well. It was a very inexpensive upgrade that in itself added more appeal. I knew I wanted to take it further though because I can never leave things well enough alone.LOL.

I wanted to paint the border design of the garage doors in white to make the garage doors pop even more. This is something that the builder did on several other homes in our section but they would not do it for us. It made me a little irritated. It was a "pick your battles" situation and I chose to let it go because I knew it was easy enough to do myself.

Such a dramatic difference!

This project I feel added to the curb appeal of our home ten fold!

It took a few days to complete but for less than $100 I think that it was well worth it. Later down the road I plan to take it even further with either window boxes or builder a pergola above the doors but for now I am in love.

I am still working on the entrance to our backyard from the driveway. At our last home we used our front door coming and going. At the new house we use the backdoor which means we go thru the gate a zillion times a day.

We plan on installing V-Groove on the porch ceiling and painting the ceilings the same color as the garage doors. Until then I installed some farmhouse lighting from the garage to the backdoor.

And here it is as promised! This is what the two story garage is all about. Instead of storing all my home decor all thru out the house it all will be going up here. It is still a major work in progress. My mom helped me work on it some while she was out a few weeks back. Thanks Mama! Though it provides a lot of storage it gets so HOT up here which means eventually we will be installing some type of AC system to keep things cooled down. Even further down the road we will be adding dry wall and flooring.

    1. Thanks Kim. Pretty much poopy to the builder on so many levels but we are here and we are blessed so that is all that matters.

  2. Wow!! I love the garage doors the way you spiffed them up! I bet you are stopping traffic with your neighbors. Love the wrought iron gate too. That area upstairs is to die for! Yes, you have to have an ac or at the very least you'll have to go up there at 6am this summer.

I was looking back at the Sea Salt in your last house today. They are painting the interior of our house right now and I'm having last minute wishes and desires but decided it's best not to make hasty paint decisions. :)

    1. We sit at the entrance to our section so I feel like it is our responsibility to welcome everyone. On of my neighbors told me that our porch always makes her smile so that makes it all worth while! Love watching the house come together and love the color you chose for your island! I am envious that you are building a TRUE custom home. Our next home way down the road will be a true custom.

  7. Pamela,
Your garage doors went from pretty to spectacular! Good job. My garage is also a two story. For years the 2nd floor was a wood-working shop, but now is mainly for storage. Since my house does not have an attic (a post and beam house that is open like a barn), we really need the 2nd story storage over the garage.

    1. Judith our home does not really have any attic space either so it was pretty much a must have. All of the mechanicals of the house are all over the "attic" area so we only have enough room for a few boxes.

  8. You'll have all the gals on here envious of your storage area, who couldn't use that kind of storage for decorative items not being used at the time?
Your garage doors turned out so gorgeous, will be envy of your neighbors, fooey on builder, bet you did much better job than they did on other garage doors. Your home sure looks wonderful, enjoy it all you can.
    Have great rest of week.

  11. Perfectly delightful!!
I think a pergola and window boxes would be perfect!! That would show off the fact you have two stories on that garage...of which I am a bit jealous .....I'd love to have a place to store "stuff".....

  16. you did a sensational job! I remember my husband telling me that his parents lived over a garage when they were first married...around 1941. I have been in a garage attic and I thought it was a fabulous space. Enjoy every inch.
