Our Suburban Farmhouse Dining Room Thus Far

Yes, you are seeing things correctly. I am here with a new post y'all!:) Today I am sharing our dining room here at the new house.

Before I do that, I thought that it would be nice to revisit our dining room at our old house. Of course just as I got it exactly the way I had always dreamed of we decided to sell. I guess that is how things go though!:) If you haven't seen our old dining room you can click here for the tour.

Here is the new dining room the day we closed. As you can see there is not really a true separation from the dining room and the foyer at this house. At the last house I had an archway into the dining room.

The dining room sits off the kitchen. The archway you see takes you to the kitchen. That door is our pantry. If you were to look right you would see the laundry room.

The dining room here at the new house is a tad smaller and thus I have one less wall to play around with and the one wall with the arch is shorter. I have grand plans for this space. It will be getting fresh paint. Actually the entire house will be getting all new paint. I tried to be different and picked out a Greige but as soon as it was going up on the walls I knew I was not going to like it. I LOVE other homes that  have Greige but since we do not get a lot of natural light due to having covered porches and lots of trees the house feels so dark during the day. That and most of the time the paint looks more beige than gray. Other than paint I will also be putting up some type of wainscoting. Still trying to decide on the design. Mr. Front Porch doesn't want me to do cross buck again but I'm not sure I can resist a version of it.

One quick and easy change was to take down the builder chandelier.

In it's place we now have the Pottery Barn Mia chandelier that use to hang in our master bath at the last house. I had converted it to a plug in since we could not have electrical ran for it without tearing out the ceiling. The buyer of our house wanted it but I said no way because I had plans for it here!:)

As you can see instead of three tall skinny windows I now have two normal sized windows. I have to admit I miss my tall skinny windows. Right now I just have some lace panels  up. Trying to decide what direction to go with the curtains. I have the ones from the last house but I am thinking I need a third panel and I am not sure I can still order a matching one anymore or not.

I did not lay my Ballard Designs rug down in here that we had at the last house because I have a rug in the foyer. I think the old dining room rug will not play well with the new foyer rug. That and I kinda like looking at our hardwood floor.

A lot of my decor is still in storage so I only have a few pieces to play around with which is fine. I am kinda on a less is more kick right now.

My chalk board is hung. I am not sure of its fate just yet. I am thinking I want to do a wainscoting that comes higher up on the wall so that would mean no more chalk board.

Though it is not exactly homey feeling for me yet it is getting there. I share over on Instagram all the time if y'all ever want to see what I am up to in real time. One of the questions I have been asked is why we just didn't have the builder do all the things we wanted? Well we had a set price we didn't want to go over so we chose items like our wood flooring instead of upgrades like lighting. Plus their selection was not personalized enough for us. Also builders want crazy prices for upgrades of any kind! We also had a very short time span to make our selections which left no time to figure out wainscoting styles and what not. Then of course we hated paying someone to do things that we knew we could do ourselves and would not mind doing. We enjoy personalizing our home.

  4. You have done a spectacular job with your dining room, Pamela. I happen to love the curtains you have now, the way the light shines through them. I sometimes miss the days when we had curtains layered over sheers. Your cabinet is awesome and I like the shutters on each side. I'm very much like you with rugs...I have little collection, they're all good but I have to change them around to match my change of taste and style. They move all over the house.

I think you are really creating the dream house you've wanted and I agree, the contractors have NO idea!

    1. Thank you Jane! I love the lace panels as well. They came from Ikea and I used them at our last home as well. They will be staying. I will just need to figure out if I want ti put up some other panels or not. Will depend on how light the room looks once I paint it and put up the wainscoting.

  6. So exciting having a home built. Sure looks fantastic. Smart not to pay builder. D/r looking very nice already.
When we lived in MT we ordered a dble wide, didn't pay for fancy things but paid for structural upgrades which would benefit in winter which can be pretty darned chilly. Paid for better roof, insulation in floors, walls, better windows and extra windows in front corner bedroom, boy do I miss that house. That corner room was my studio, working in there looked out at acres of our land (had 20 acres) looked onto mountains and lake, on full moon nights was breathtaking, especially with snow and ice on lake. Our house wasn't really big but what a location, miss MT so much.
    Enjoy your new home.

    1. Yes, time and patience Pam! I wish I had more of it. It is hard going from a house where I was so close to having it all perfect to not starting over but starting over if that makes any sense. Thank you for stopping by for a visit!

  13. Pamela, your dining room looks fantastic already. You'll make it your own soon and you'll be feeling all snuggly like you've been there for years.

It sounds like you are in the same predicament we had at our last house. One side of the house would be flooded with light but the other side would be dark. Our paint color was about like yours and although others saw it as the perfect neutral - the darkness made me crazy! Paint will definitely change that.

  14. It's so much fun to watch you make this house a home. You've worked miracles already. I completely agree that builders just don't have vision when it comes to doing anything other than "stock standard". LOVE what you're doing over there (and I'm seriously coveting that picture on top of your china cabinet). xoxo

  18. It is stunning. I so need you to come to my house, We are in the process of changing the flooring, trying to decide if we want the same throughout the house, I am leaning to tile in the Kitchen but don't want to change the tile in the foyer ( the tiler did a pattern layout) tile is now not available..love your floor any idea what it is color?

    1. Thank you Ann. I am not sure what the flooring is called. I would have to look it up in all of our paper work. It was not our first choice but our first choice ended up being discontinued which was fine with me cause the one we have was the next level up ad i loved it more!;)

  21. Pam,
It looks really nice!! I am sure it is a daunting task to decide how to change up things and get it all looking the way you want in your new home. It took me 30 years to finally get my house looking the way I wanted it!!
Thanks so much for stopping by!!

  22. I think it is coming along and looks lovely! what fun to have a new space to work with!
I still love the chalkboard...maybe turn it so it can sit above a wainscoting??
We haven't had a rug in the dining room for ages....because they get ruined with chairs going in and out and food etc....
    Looks lovely!
