The Makings of A Suburban Farmhouse Kitchen

Back at the beginning of April we went to the design center to choose everything for our new home build. We were given two 3 hour time slots. Let me tell you it was very nerve racking trying to narrow down exactly what finishes we wanted our new home to have. I had so many ideas and directions I wanted to go but I had no time to hem and haw over them. We had to make decisions quickly other wise we risked our optimal completion deadline. 

Our first visit I was a nervous wreck. All the ideas I had were not going to work. The selections from the builder just were not going to make it happen. Though discouraged we went back for our second consult energized and plugged away at our design choices. 

We picked out the most important items first. Things we truly did not want to have to worry about redoing later on down the road like our flooring and cabinet style.

I decided to go with a Greige paint color wanting to be different with the new home but also knowing that if I feel like it is too dark in the end I can always go back and lighten and brighten things up myself. It just means more DIY projects to share and super easy since our home is mostly one story. 

For our new home I have more of a timeless, traditional farmhouse picture in my head. Something that I can dress up or down depending on my mood. We went with iconic white shaker cabinets along with black and white Silestone counter tops. The backsplash will be a DIY after we move in. We are however having them install a simple white subway tile above the range. Easy to rip out after I decide if I want to go with all subway tile, brick, or even plank the backsplash. I am still up in the air about it. 

I am over the moon with finally getting to have an apron front farmhouse sink! I really wanted to have the Ikea apron front sink installed. I just have always loved the vintage feel it has but that was a no go for warranty issues so my only choice was a basic Kohler apron front. 

I went back and fourth on whether or not to have a wide spread faucet installed with a separate sprayer. It would have given the space a true vintage feel but in the end I went with practicality. I have always had a pull down faucet so this one from Moen was as close to a vintage feel I could find in a pull down that the builder could order.

I do not have pictures of our appliances but our home comes with an Electrolux double oven which I am also excited about! The appliances look really beautiful and include the double oven, microwave, and we upgraded to a 5 burner gas cooktop. Our appliance package does not include a fridge and since we gave up our 9 year old fridge to the buyers of our last home I am on the hunt for a new one.

I fell in love with this KitchnAid French Door fridge. It is so pretty on the inside. We had purchased a KitchenAid dishwasher at the end of 2014 and loved it so I figure their fridges must be just as sweet!? So far Mr. Front Porch is not giving into my whim though so I am still on the hunt for a french door fridge with lots of storage. Any suggestions? I have heard such horror stories about new refrigerators these days and I would hate to get a dud. Of course the boys fell in love with one that has a Kureig function and dispenses hot water. As awesome as it would be to have instant cappuccino and hot chocolate the two weeks it gets cold around here I even said no to that one!;)
