How To Create a Faux Vintage Mirror on Glass

Faux Antique Mirror Tutorial-Faux Vintage Mirror Effect- From My Front Porch To Yours
I am currently working on a project that is LONG overdue for completion.

Dumpster Dive Grandfather Clock- From My Front Porch To Yours
See this here clock? I found this clock on the curb one morning when taking Oldest & Littlest to school. I was that crazy lady in her pjs trying to shove it in the back of my car by myself. If you want to read more about it and see what the clock looked like when I picked it up be sure to read the original post. I got started on making it over right away and then I stopped. It sat and it sat and it sat and well here we are 3.5 years later. Did you see that in tiny print?;) I am so embarrassed that this clock has sat so long in its unfinished state but alas I am finally inspired to complete it. Secretly I was hoping to stumble upon a faux Mora clock but that has not happened so I am just going with what I have.

The clock does not work so I decided to take out the insides which left me to thinking of what to do to the door so you will not be able to see that the insides are gone. Some of you may be wondering why on earth I would even want a clock that does not work? What can I say, I am quirky like that.

I took the door off so I could clean the paint off the glass. See I have an aversion to using painters tape. I only use it when I absolutely must. The first go around it was not a must. Thankfully the paint came off fairly easy with a wet paper towel.

Next I decided that painters tape was a must and tapped off the glass.
Krylon Looking Glass Spray Paint-Faux Vintage Mirror Effect- From My Front Porch To Yours
I purchased some Krylon Looking Glass spray paint in silver. It is about $13 a can but I had a 40% off coupon which made the price not so bad. You can find it at most local craft stores.

You will also need some distilled white vinegar and water.

Since I was working with spray paint I had to take my project outside into the shade. Man it is hot here in Texas! Anyways, here are all the supplies I used to create the faux vintage mirror effect on the glass.

Krylon Looking Glass in Silver
Rust-Oleum Metallic Finish in Gold
Rust-Oleum Clear Coat- Optional
Paper Towels
Equal Parts of Water and White Distilled Vinegar

I mixed equal parts of the vinegar and water in a measuring cup and just flicked it onto the glass with my fingers. I made sure that there were small droplets as well as larger droplets.

Next up I sprayed on the Krylon Looking Glass in Silver. I made sure to give it a good coating. As you can see the paint sits on top of the vinegar/water droplets.

Wait a minute or two for the paint to some what dry then GENTLY dab the droplets with a paper towel. It does not take much pressure! If you press too hard you risk leaving the impression from the paper towel design and you certainly do not want that to happen.

Next up I flicked some more vinegar/water on the glass and sprayed a light coat of gold spray paint over the silver looking glass spray paint. I waited the same amount of time and dabbed it off. Continue these steps till you achieve the final look you are happy with. I ended up going back over it all with the silver looking glass spray paint to achieve the final look I wanted. I then sprayed the back of the glass with a light coat of clear coat. This is optional but I did it because I did not want to risk the back getting scratched and messing up the look. Without the clear coat it is very easy to scratch the paint off.

Here is the completed look! It was sorta hard to get a good picture of it because of how sunny it was outside.

Now I am off to finish painting the clock itself. Hope to have it ready to share soon so be sure to stop back by!

  7. It looks great Pamela. I just did this with an old wood window, but I didn't use vinegar. I had so much fun doing it and wanted to turn everything into a mirror. ;)
