World Market Inexpensive Knock Off Wood & Glass Sign Tutorial

World Market Fresh Baked Pie Sign
I am sure you have seen this sign from World Market. It has been all over blogland for awhile now. I have been wanting one for months and our World market never had it in stock and I was too stubborn to pay for shipping. Well now it is on Clearance and no longer available. Sigh. So what is a girl to do? So happens I had all the supplies to make my own version.
Dining Room Chalk Board- From My Front porch To Yours

I am sure you all remember the "Blessings" chalk board I made last spring for our dining room. Since I erased it to create a holiday chalk board I decided I wanted to bring the "Blessing" back.

My mom had given me a box of wooden frames in different sizes a few summers ago that she scored at an estate sale. You can get cheap wood frames from the $1 store if you do not happen to have any on hand. I used an 8x10 frame and painted it using my Annie Sloan Chalk Paints. You can use any type of paint for this project. The chalk paint is just what I had on hand.

While waiting for my frame to dry I created the "Blessing" again in Picmonkey. I had to of course use different fonts so that the blessing would fit. After I created it I made sure to flip it for tracing purposes. To save you time you are more than welcome to just take the one here that I created to make your own "Blessings" sign. Now of course if you have a vinyl cutting machine you can certainly create a stencil that way but I have yet to figure out how to use mine so I just stuck to the old fashion way of sign making.

I printed the "Blessing" out and laid the glass on top of it to position just where I wanted it to fall. I then traced around the glass so I could trim the paper down and tape it to the glass.

Next up I took my black paint marker that I purchased at Michaels for $2.48 I think it was for a pack of two and then a 40% off coupon. I had attempted to do this without spending any money by using a Sharpie I had on hand but it was not turning out the way I wanted it to in the least! You could see every stroke of the marker and if I needed to go back over an area it would take the sharpie right back off. The paint marker was way easier!

This is what you will see once you are completed tracing. Let it sit and dry for an hour or so. If you find that you are not happy with your tracing skills and want to start over no worries. This happened to me and so I just took a wet paper towel immediately after I was thru tracing and just wiped the paint off. For the few spots that were already dry I used some finger nail polish remover to get those off and then I just cleaned the glass with Windex and started over.

Once the paint was dry I decided I wanted to seal it in case I  ever needed to wipe the back of it down. I did not want the possibility of the paint wiping off. You can use a clear top coat for this. I know Krylon sells some. I had some Artisian Enhancements Clear top coat on hand and though it is suppose to only be for painted pieces and wood I decided to try it anyways. I use a wide sponge brush and painted a very light coat over back of the sign. It took over night for it to dry but worked perfectly.

I distressed my frame just a tad. I did not want too much of that horrible orange peeking thru. If I had used a pretty stained frame I would have distressed it a tad more.

Since this is a see thru sign you of course will not be placing the back back on the frame to hold the glass in place so what I came up with was to place a dot of hot glue in each corner of the frame. Then I carefully laid the glass back in the frame pushing down ever so slightly till it was in place.

To ensure that it would stay in I placed dots in the corners again and even ran a little down the edges. I wanted to make sure that the glass was going no where!

Super easy project that would cost you less than $10 if you do not already have the supplies on hand.

I love how it turned out. I am still crossing my fingers though that I will luck up on that pie sign!;) For those waiting on the wood beams reveal, I promise it is coming. We took the weekend off to enjoy family time but it is on the  to do list for the upcoming weekend so stay tuned.

  5. Wonderful project. so creative, never would've thought of doing that. Someday, would you mind taking a picture with a larger view of that area? would love to see it with the surrounding cabinets, etc.
