Pipe Cleaner Candy Cane Tutorial

This holiday season I have been feeling rather crafty. Since I was adding vintage charm to our Christmas decor this year I decided to make some good ol' fashion pipe cleaner candy canes. You can purchase packs of 20 from your local craft store. They are less than a $1 a pack. I ended up purchasing mine from Michaels. I preferred their red and the feel of their pipe cleaners to others I had found. 

Cut the pipe cleaners in half and in some cases even in threes if you want even smaller candy canes.

Next up, pick two approximately the same length. Even though you cut them in half you will find some longer than others.

Next take the tips and cross them, making an x.

Bend the tips around each other forming the candy cane design.

Continue wrapping one color of pipe cleaner around the other.

Make sure to keep the spacing between the red and white  the same all the way down. If you do not your candy cane will look wonky.

In the end you will have a piece that looks like this. This is where I tell you that some craft stores carry pipe cleaners already in the candy cane pattern but they sell out quickly and I just preferred making my own.

After you have your candy cane stick made next up you just make the hook at the top by wrapping the end of the stick around two fingers.

There you have some fun vintage looking canes that you can use thru out your holiday decor. Note, if your candy canes are spikey on the ends just bend them a tad to prevent getting stabbed. These are super easy to make and a great project to do with kids.
