French Country Farmhouse Dining Room Makeover- Part 1

This past week I started making over our dining room here at the new house.

I had shared our dining room awhile back. If you missed that post you can see it here. I had been trying to decide on a design plan for it and one of the first things I did was order some new seating.

I purchased two sets of the Mayhew chairs from Target when they were on sale. I figured now that our boys are older they would enjoy having a normal place to sit instead of a bench.

Next I ended up getting two parson chairs from a local furniture store. We had received a store credit from them back in January when we purchased a mattress from them. I had originally wanted a chair I had seen for our living room but they ended up selling out of it. I have a few ideas on how to add some personality to these.

Since I had the new seating I started playing around with paint. It is always so dark in here due to my original paint selection when we built the house so I was excited to go with a lighter and brighter color.

My first attempt was Sherwin Williams Sea Salt which I LOVE and am using in our master bath and have used in our previous home. It definently brighten things up but in the dining room it looked more like a baby blue then a blue gray and though beautiful I just was not feeling it for this space.

I ended up going with Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray. The main areas of our home will eventually all be Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray to include our foyer which the dining room is open to. I decided on Mindful Gray because it is a shade or two darker than Agreeable thus it will provide a nice contrast between the two spaces. I was not sure at first how I would feel going with a darker color but to my surprise it actually brightened the space up from the original color that was on the walls.

Then I decided to stop hemming and hawing on what style of wainscoting I wanted to do in here. I loved my Crossbuck Wainscoting I did at our last home. Mr. Front Porch was never a fan and wanted something more traditional.

So traditional won out and we installed board and batten.

This is where I am at today. I still need to put another coat of paint on the upper and lower sections as well as caulk everything. That will take a day or two. I really like how it comes up higher on the wall but not too high so that I can still hang things on the wall. I couldn't wait and placed my chalkboard up there to see how it would look. I probably will turn it sideways eventually.

I am hoping to have the space put together within the upcoming week but there will still be little projects I want to do as far as curtains and the parson chairs and some corbels. Stay tuned!
