Kitchen Dreaming Like A Mouse

I could spend hours looking at pictures of beautiful kitchens.

I love this one for so many reasons from the antique chandy to the toile curtains.

This one has slightly distressed antique white cabinets and a custom range hood.

A beautiful blue island.

Have you noticed any similarities in these kitchens? They are all light and bright and airy. I have been longing to brighten up our kitchen. If you have been following me for sometime you may have realized I do not really share pics of our kitchen.
Alot of people may call me crazy but I have been begging The Hubster to agree to my painting the cabinets.
Our kitchen is not very big and to me it is very dark.
We have the dark cabinets and Baltic Brown Granite. Last year we priced changing out the granite and it would have been well over $7,000 for just basic lighter granite. We are too practical and could not justify cahnging out perfectly fine granite at that price tag. 3 years ago I painted our kitchen SW Camelback which did not help with the whole cave factor so earlier this week I decided to repaint the walls as you may be able to tell from this pic. There are several testers going on in here!;)
While trying to choose a new paint color to my surprise The Hubster asked me what color I wanted to paint the cabinets. I was in shock!;) Well one thing led to another pretty much like those "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" books. New wall paint and the idea of painting the cabinets led to a trip to the tile store just to browse.
We ended up coming home with new tile for our backsplash! This was so not in my plans when I had decided to repaint the walls.
The Hubster agreed the backsplash needed to come down.  It was not anything special. Just our floor tile set on a diagonal.
Within 24 hours of The Hubster agreeing to the cabinet painting we had demolished our backsplash. Thankfully it came down fairly easily and we did not have to replace any sheet rock.
This adventure has been rather interesting. Our plans evolve and change daily. We do not really know what we will end up with. All I do know is that it will be much brighter in here! After several other plans we ended up with this design for behind our cooktop.

In the last three days we have been going non stop and I can not wait to share our makeover with y'all. The tile is 75% up as of right now. By the end of the weekend I hope to have it all up to share with ya on Monday. We have some other major changes as well planned for in here so stay tuned!;)

Hope everybody is having a great weekend! Thanx for stopping by.

Pamela, This is so funny to know that you were fighting with him to paint the cabinets and then you see him chipping out the new tile lol.. Its going to look great! I'll be looking forward to seeing the new look. Also maybe If you add extra under cabinet lighting, it could also help.

How exciting! So glad your husband agreed to painting the cabinets...and how fun that he jumped in and wanted a new backsplash. You are going to love the cabinets painted...it will so lighten up the space. If I knew my tiles would come off as easily as your's and not damage the sheetrock...I'd change out my backsplash too. As it is..this has encouraged me to do it one day soon.

I painted our cabinets 3 years ago, and they are holding up really well. My kitchen was like yours, very dark. The cabinets were an oak color and the walls dark brown. At first I just painted the cabinets, but eventually I painted the walls too, actually the same color as the cabinets, Sherwin Williams softer tan. I also took off a couple of cabinet doors for more open storage for my fiesta ware

Oh- That is a BIG job but it will be so worth it when you are done. It is just going to be gorgeous. Did your hubby put up a BIG fight about painting the cabinets? Most men hate t when you paint wood for some reason. xo Diana

Pamela,
I think it is going to be great when you get it done. It is a lot of work to paint cabinets but so worth it in the end. I can't wait to see your back splash tiles done too. You picked out some pretty tiles. How exciting I can't wait to see. I think you need to feature your home on your Sunday How I got my Style series when the kitchen is done!!!!!

This is SO exciting, Pamela! Lighter colors are really going to open up your kitchen. My hubby refuses to paint our kitchen cabinets...they are custom made pine, but I have found through blogging that the majority of men have a major phobia of painting wood. So good for you!

Can't wait to see your changes! :)

Jane

Wow, that is a real case of give the mouse a cookie, kitchen version. I understand the dark cave kitchen dilemma. I have been planning to paint my kitchen island because I am too chicken to paint them all. Can't wait to see how your changes turn out. And how great is it that your hubby is on board. Have a happy home improvement weekend.

I have the same issues in my kitchen as you. I intended to redo the kitchen table this weekend, then chickened out because I'm quite sure I will then want to paint the walls and cabinets.

Can't wait to see the finished project.

You can totally make that granite work with painted cabinets. I had those same ceiling can lights in my kitchen and replacing them made all the difference.

Good luck!
