How I Found My Style Sundays- Sew A Fine Seam

How I Found My Style Sundays- From My Front Porch To Yours
Hi I'm Jill from Sew a Fine Seam and I'm thrilled to be here today! So fun to be included in a list of such incredible bloggers who have been featured on Pamela's 'How I Found My Style' Sundays. Thanks so much, Pamela, for asking me. She asked via Instagram when I shared a pic of my new living room chandelier. So lets start with a photo of my living room and the question 'My Decorating Style is...?'

My decorating style? Eclectic/vintage/a-touch-industrial/all-white. Not very technical, I know. In a nutshell my style is 'What I Love'. If I like it I go with it. If I love it it stays. If it somehow doesn't work and I don't love it, I move on! The cow hide rug is new as is the chandy. The chandy really is too small for the room but somehow I like it and it's working for me so it's staying. I reserve the right to change my mind at any point, but for now I'm loving it! The chairs need slipcovered - all white of course! I love my white. It washes beautifully and just makes me happy.

That 12 foot shelf can be quite a challenge to decorate. Normally it is completely full - you can see other posts that show my decor by visiting my decor page and you will see it filled from end to end. A few months ago I ran across a pic of a mantel that was as long as my shelf if not longer. And the owners had decorated it with a huge statement piece in the center and left the rest empty. I decided I would try that with my shelf sometime and after the Christmas decor came down I decided now was the time. I know it won't last long because I've tried simplifying decor in other areas of our home and found that I am not a minimalist. I'll be adding to or changing it up soon I'm sure! For now I rather love it :D

Our dining room is a bit farmhouse with the vintage harvest table. I love the light that streams through the windows in our 'nook'.
So how did I 'Find My Decorating Style?' It's been years in the making! For the first few years we were married I just used what I had from before I was married to decorate. I remember looking around my house one day and wondering what style I really wanted for my home. I hadn't done a lot because there was so much remodeling we needed to do. I had photos of my family and a few candles - other than that I'd gotten tired of my decor items and most had been sold in garage sales or ended up at goodwill. Then a friend opened up a small shop selling antiques and primitives and my love of decorating took hold with a vengeance and I've never looked back. I've found I love vintage, white, linens, metal, chandys, and on the list goes. I also love to change things. Not much in my home stays for a long time. And now that I also have a business that includes buying and selling vintage finds and furniture, I can change things up even more. If I find something new that I want in my home, I can sell something I have to make room for my newest fun find.

So how do I answer the question 'What has been your most treasured find for your home?' Since not much stays I struggled a bit with this one :D I have some favorites though, that I don't see myself getting rid of for a long long time. Those shutters you see at the windows in my living room. Love.Them.So.Much. They are old - from an old church building. My husband altered them a bit to fit the windows and they are functioning. I love the ease of closing them at night, and I love the European farmhouse feel they give the room.

I also really really like my bust of 'David'. I've had him for several years now and not once thought of getting rid of him. He'll be around for awhile I'm quite sure. He'll be one of the things my grandchildren wonder why I had :D

And the final question Pamela asked 'What tips do you have for creating a beautiful home?' My answer is simple - do what you love. Work with what you have, move it around, paint it to freshen it, add in things your really love or that mean something to you. If you love it, it works.

It doesn't matter if you are mixing styles that 'the experts' would say is not to be done. If you love it - do it! If you love color, embrace that and incorporate lots of it in every room. I love white and it works for me. It washes well and can be bleached if needed. I find myself sometimes looking at my room and tweaking this or that till it just suits me. I love doing it so rearranging often is pretty standard here. If you don't like to rearrange, do it once and leave it. It only matters what you think.

Jill thank you so much for stopping by today and sharing your home and style with us. I love your style and agree if you do what you love and not just what is in style.

  6. Thank you so much, Pamela! I love Jill's home...very sweet and just the perfect balance of vintage/farmhouse. I like that she sells pieces before she brings new pieces in...that's such a great bargain all around and keeps your home from getting boring. She didn't mention she is a wonderful seamstress! You rock, Jill! :)

  7. I love what Jill does, decorating, her blog, her ideas for life, she's gotten to be a good friend and I"m so glad I have her for a friend. Don't know where she gets all that energy, must be due to being young. Ah if only. I'm an old lady already (74) but so enjoy hearing about what the young bloggers do and about their families. Bloggers are great people I've had the fun of finding out. None better in this world. Happy week everybody.
