How I Found My Style Sundays- Junk Chic Cottage

Hi my name is Kris and my blog is http://junkchiccottage.blogspot.com I was excited when Pam asked me to be part of her How I Found My Style Series.  I am pretty new to blogging and just learning to navigate this new world.   I have meet some of the sweetest people that share my love of decorating.    I would love to share with all of you a little bit about me and my style and decor.
To start my decorating style is Cottage Chic. I love whites, creams and pops of soft colors. The chippy, faded and worn pieces are signature to my style.  I love things with history like an old door off an old home and then I re purpose it into my home decor.  I like my home to be soft and relaxed.

I found my decorating style when my husband and I moved to our current home 5 years ago.  We have two daughters that were out on their own and He took a job as the fire chief in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago.  We sold our home where we lived for over 25 years and downsized to a cute little cottage ranch in a Lake town near where he took his job.  This is when my love of cottage, chippy and vintage style bloomed.

The most treasured things in my home are old heirlooms passed down from family.  A big part  of my signature style is  re loving old vintage pieces like doors, windows, chippy shutters etc. pieces with history and giving them new purpose in my home.  I think they add such character to your home.

I think to create a beautiful home is not how much money you spend on decor but how much of your decor reflects your personality and things you truly love.  I feel your home should be comfy and inviting and reflect you.
This is the entry way into my home. This is where my love of old vintage doors and shutters become part of my decor.
I love vintage cottage and do a lot of soft whites and creams throughout my home. My love of flowers, and gardening and old chippy things is found through out my decor style.
Even in my white world I need space for the hubby!!! We found him this worn leather club recliner. I felt it mixed nicely with my white cottage decor. Gave him a "manly" space in my white world!

Old vintage bike that I just fell in love with the moment I set eyes on her.  I love that I have this right off my french doors that lead out to my garden. I love to bring the outdoors into my decor.
My kitchen is a mixture of farmhouse and cottage chic.
My dining room is all cottage with whites and cream.
In my office I like to surround myself with all things I love. No real planned style just things I love and have collected. I like to use old things like the old gate hanging above my desk for a bulletin board.
I like to take things like the wine holder and make it work for storage of my many magazines. This old table with the vintage wire baskets helps to organize my collection of magazines and decor books. I am a little bit of a hoarder when it comes to design magazines and decor books!!!!!
I framed out this window in my office with some old chippy posts and the header is made from old doors. I added my favorite motto to live by "Live, Love, Junk!"
Laundry room. A mixture of old vintage laundry things I have been collecting.  The cabinet over the washer and dryer has the old vintage washboards for doors.
More Laundry Room.
Love all the natural light that comes in this laundry room. This laundry room was a total remodel so if you would like the before and afters you can check it out on my blog.
In my smaller guest room I used old vintage cottage gates for headboards.  Love the statement they make in the room
Old vintage frames hung on the walls. They give a statement all by themselves.
Since we live in a lake town I wanted to do my other guest room in a lake theme.   I always think of blue when I think of the lake cottage so I added pops of blue in this room.
This old farmhouse mailbox came right off the farm.  I love this treasure I found. So chippy and full of character.
Another  chippy old shutter I found and put up in this room.
This guest room faces west so the sun comes in so bright in late afternoon and you can see the sunset from this room so when I found this old vintage street sign I knew it would be perfect over this window.
This is my master bedroom. This is my favorite room in our house. It is truly my sanctuary. I wanted it soft and relaxed in this room.  I have a lot of overstuffed duvets and pillows. The headboard was made by my talented hubby.  He made this headboard out of old doors we found at the flea market. He framed them and used some crown molding and I just love the history of these doors and how they are part of my bedroom.  Chandeliers are so romantic and a big part of my bedroom. I have the old wire fencing chandy with the old insulater bulbs to hold votives.  The other chandelier hanging over our bed brings romance into the room too.
Old vintage suitcases and this chippy folding chair I found in the trash. Yep! that is right someone threw out this little treasure. Rescued her and brought her home.
My little furry friend wanted to be in the pictures so I said ok since she matches my cream and white decor!!!!!!!

Well that is some decor style from my lake cottage home. Thank you Pam for this fun opportunity and I thank all of you for taking this tour. Thank you letting me share some of my home with you.
Thanx so much Kris for sharing your amazing home with us! I love all the little details you put into it especially your laundry room cabinet doors!

  6. I am "Running" to follow Kris and her blog. I recently moved into a ranch style cottage, and though not new to loving the cottage style, am starting from scratch ( long story) , and her style is exactly what I love a combo of farmhouse and garden cottage, and for me a bit of French thrown in. I am always now on the hunt for inspiration and ideas, and your blog and now Junk Chic Cottage certainly offer that in spades!
