Foyer Makeover Farmhouse Cottage Style-DIY Shiplap

Spring Break was last week as well as my Birthday. We will not talk numbers. LOL. All I wanted to do was accomplish a project on my wish list for the house. It involved making over our foyer. It is not much of a foyer. Just a small wall with french doors leading into the office.

I knew I wanted to add some WOW factor. Our foyer in the last house was full of the WOW Factor with two stories and the faux brick wall leading into the office. It was a dreamy foyer indeed. I knew this foyer could be just as dreamy even on a smaller scale.

I gave the foyer a quick coat of Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray. It is the color I chose to repaint all the main areas of our home. You may not be able to tell a difference from this pic and the previous one but trust me when I tell you Agreeable Gray is a much lighter color than the original color. If you look closely in this pic you can see the darker color around the trim work.

After painting came the installation of our DIY shiplap. Now you may be asking why I even bothered painting the wall prior to installing the boards and that is because I learned my lesson at the last house. To install the boards we used a penny in between them. Some of the boards you can see part of the wall so it is MUCH easier to just go ahead and paint the wall the color you are going to paint the boards to save yourself the trouble of having to back in with a small artist brush and paint in between the boards. It took us a day to cut the boards and install them. Then a day to fill in the nail holes, prime, paint, and caulk.

As you can see the wall is now white and not Agreeable Gray. Mr. Front Porch wanted to try it out as white so I agreed since I already had Alabaster paint on hand from when we installed our kitchen backsplash . The office doors I painted months ago and just never shared. Eventually they will be getting crystal door knobs like our last house. In all honesty I am not sure about the white. I am really thinking of going back over it with Agreeable Gray but I am going to wait a little while to see if it grows on me. The white is the same color as our dining room wainscoting which is why Mr. Front Porch thought the shiplap should be white as well.

The foyer now has a personality all its own. I am hoping to convince Mr. Front Porch that we need to plank the ceiling in here next for even more of a WOW factor. We have dreams of bricking the archways to the right of the picture but that will be later down the road.

I am currently busy styling the space and will share soon. I will also be sharing the next project I am about to tackle in our home! It involves crystals, light and paint!:)

  3. This looks awesome and EXACTLY what I envision doing in our master bedroom. I would love to know some of the details on this project i.e., best place to purchase the wood and the size of the wood. It really looks great!

    1. That would be amazing Linda! We did it in our master at the house. That was our first shiplap project and we learned a lot. We purchased 5.0mm underlayment from Home Depot. It is not too thin or too thick. I think it was $14 a sheet. Some Home Depots will cut the boards down for you but sadly ours would not. I think ripping the boards was the most work. We ripped them into 6 inch wide strips.

  4. So since you didn’t paint the shipl grey but white instead did you still have to go in wirh a detail brush between all the boards? Like how it looks. I also prefer white over grey.

    1. Hi Tammy! Thanks for stopping by to visit. Agreeable Gray is a super light color in our home. Hubby actually thinks it looks white so it all worked out. That and any larger gaps worked out to be in less obvious places.

  6. Love the shiplap in your entry! If we didn't already have beadboard in our kitchen, I'd shiplap it!

  7. Your wall looks fabulous! The size of the walls works perfectly with the boards. I know you are going to love this for ages to come.

We did a few spots in our last house too and now I'd like to do a bedroom here.

    1. We did our bedroom at the last house and loved it so I knew we would be doing it in places here as well. Trying to figure out what I want to do in our bedroom.

  9. It looks great, Pamela! Just a thought - it you keep the wall white, you could paint the interior of your beautiful secretary with agreeable gray to tie it all together. Your posts are always so inspiring!

    1. Thank you Jane for your idea! I actually pulled the secretary out of the space for now and am indeed keeping the shiplap white. Once I putted secretary back it will have to be repainted though and I am not sure what color I want to do just yet. Right now in its creamy white it just doesn't work well.
