Creating a Dining Room Chalkboard

From My Front Porch To Yours- DIY Dining Room Chalk Board Tutorial
Today I thought that I would share with you all how I created our dining room chalkboard.

It all started with this 24x36 frame. I knew it would be perfect for the wall in the dining room.

Mr. Front Porch and I cut down a piece of scrap plywood that was out in the garage and then I painted it with chalkboard paint. I applied four coats with a foam brush.

Next up I seasoned the board by rubbing chalk on it and then rubbing it off with a paper towel.

My original plan was to use chalkboard printouts to save on time but as you can see that did not turn out so well. All was not lost though. To create my print outs I used a tutorial from Lucy over at Craftberry Bush. Mind you she did not say that they would make great print outs. I was just hoping they would. I had these printed at Staples. The Staples employee told me that they have a hard time getting the chalkboard graphics to print out properly so it is a hit or miss most of the time. Instead of throwing the print outs away he only charged me for one which was nice of him because I knew I could make use of them by using the old school transfer method.

I went to Michaels and bought a few supplies. I found it was a MUST to have two different sized tips for the chalk markers. The chalk pencil I purchased did not work so save your money on that one.

Next up I flipped my chosen graphic over and rubbed chalk over the back. I used an entire stick of chalk wanting to make sure there was enough on there. Note this is messy and chalk dust will get everywhere.

After rubbing chalk on the back I flipped the graphic back over and used painters tape to secure it to the plywood chalkboard.

When tracing I always like to use a colored pen so I can see where I have traced already. Make sure you trace with a firm hand.
From My Front Porch To Yours- DIY Dining Room Chalk Board Tutorial
Now this is the part I was not so sure how it would turn out because I normally use a pencil on the back of my graphics to trace and transfer but seeing as pencil lead would not show up on black chalkboard paint I had to resort to using chalk. To my surprise it came out fairly well in most spots.

I used the smaller tip chalkboard marker to outline the words. I found it was easier to work from bottom to top so I would not be brushing any of the chalk off with my arm and hand as I went along.

Next up I filled in with the wide tip chalk marker.

Now it is not perfect but chalkboards are not meant to look perfect. I highly recommend chalk markers. I do not see how you could possibly make a large chalkboard without the chalk markers. They do not brush off but have to be removed with a damp cloth which is a major plus.
This project cost me just $3.50 I think it was for the print outs from Staples and then approximately $4 per chalk marker. I still have plenty left in them for the next chalkboard. I already had the chalkboard paint on hand but I believe it is $9 a can at Lowes. It is a relatively inexpensive project but I will warn you a chalkboard project of this size takes time. From start to finish it took me 2 hours. I made mine after my men were all in bed!:)

Now that the chalkboard is completed I am ready to start on the next dining room project-seating!

Completed dining room space can be seen here.

New Dining Room Curtains & My Favorite Flower

I have been working away on the dining room.
From My Front Porch To Yours- New Dining Room Curtains
So far I have this little corner put together and the new curtains up. If you missed it last week I shared how I achieved the custom cross buck/barn door wainscoting.

I love the faux linen striped panels. They are the same color story as the cabana striped ones I used in our master bedroom. If you look closely you can see that I put up lace panels in the actual windows. It is hard to get a picture where they show up.

This is how the corner of our dining room looked for more than several years.
From My Front Porch To Yours-Dining Room Corner After
This is what it looks like now. I have always wanted a large chalkboard in the dining room so I figured why not put one here. The blue buffet is a piece I had in our living room last year before I made that space over. It was between our two chairs. I was going to have to sell it because after the living room makeover I no longer had a place for it and it was killing me to think of letting it go. I am so glad that I ended up finding a spot for it in here! Of course I am still working on accessorizing the space but I figured y'all might like to see where I am at.
From My Front Porch To Yours- Peonies
Before I go I wanted to share the peonies Mr. FrontPorch bought for me. I have long loved Peonies and have never had any. He has always wanted to buy me some for Valentines Day but I am too practical and tell him not to spend the crazy amount of $$ on them.

When we stumbled upon these at the grocery store for just $6.99 a bunch he bought me both colors.

They are so beautiful and smell wonderful.

I even had enough to put in the kitchen to enjoy. Note sneak peek at another project I am working on!;)

I could not believe how fast the buds blossomed open after I put them in water. Peonies are truly a beautiful flower!

How I Found My Style Sundays- Nest of Bliss

From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays

Hello 'From My Front Porch To Yours' readers! My name is Brandi and I blog over at DIY and interior design blog Nest of Bliss! 'How I Found My Style Sundays' is one of my favorite series - Pamela is always introducing us to wonderful bloggers with absolutely inspiring homes. So, when she asked me to share my style I was super excited, honored, and a *little* nervous. From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-Farmhouse Kitchen - Summer Tour - @nestofbliss From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-Farmhouse Kitchen - Summer Farmhouse Tour - @nestofbliss You see, the truth is I am still working on my style! Our century farmhouse in the country is our very first home and the first place I ever got to redesign. It's been a dream come true and so much fun! Through the process of making this house a home, I'm finding things that work for me, and things that don't... my style is progressively changing as I figure out what makes my heart feel warm.
From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-Farmhouse Foyer - Summer Farmhouse Tour - @nestofbliss From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-starfish in antique bread bowl 1 There are so many different styles I admire and think are so beautiful... but if something doesn't give me a certain feeling in my heart, it's not right. It's a feeling of comfort, coziness, happiness, nostalgia... a combination of many things. A feeling of a place you want to stay in.
From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-Farmhouse Living Room - Summer Farmhouse Tour - @nestofbliss From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays-Farmhouse Living Room - Summer Farmhouse Tour - @nestofbliss I'm so happy and proud of the renovations on our home. The styles in here that speak to me are very coastal, farmhouse (but of course!), and vintage... I will definitely take these styles with me into my next home, and I love building onto what we've created here. I have found that spaces mean so much more to me if they are filled with pieces that bring up happy memories. Pieces that are passed down, built, or found on a fun weekend adventure. Do you decorate this way as well? With the major renovations done, I really started to enjoy decorating the house. I didn't have a lot of items to work with, but I know over time I will develop a collected look that will mean so much to me. I'm really interested to see how my style continues to change with time & the different places I live in. Living in a farmhouse definitely influenced my design style as I felt it was important to stay true to the character of the home - but I am so happy with how this house has turned out!
