In The Bloglight

I am truly honored today to have been chosen as a featured blogger in HomeTalk's "In The Bloglight" series.
Some of you may be wondering what is HomeTalk!? Home Talk is a great place to get inspired, ask questions, and to share your personal projects. You do not even have to have a blog! It is a great online community for everybody.

Miriam, HomeTalk's Director of Community Development, asked me a few fun questions.

How did you get into blogging?

I first started blogging about 7 years ago after I stumbled upon Sugarpie Farmhouse and Kelly's Korner. Blogging looked like a lot of fun and I could not wait to start my own blog. My first blog centered around every day life with toddlers and my baby boutique business.

How did you decide on the name of your blog?
From My Front Porch To Yours Acadian Home
It did not take me very long to come up with the name of my blog. At the time we lived in Baton Rouge and had an acadian style home with a long front porch. It was one of my most favorite things about our Baton Rouge House and 'From My Front Porch To Yours' just seemed fitting.

What was the first project you ever posted?

I have to admit my blog was not all that exciting at first. It actually has taken quite a few years to find myself in the world of blogging. I go back to the beginning from time to time and think to myself yawn!;)
From My Front Porch To Yours
Our breakfast room in our Baton Rouge House was one of the first projects I ever posted. I cringe looking at this pic because I have learned so much thru the years of blogging. Flash is NOT your friend and it is always best to scan your space to make sure there are not any Chick Fil A cups sitting around!;)

What is your most popular project on HomeTalk to date?
From My Front Porch To Yours

I love sharing over on HomeTalk and my most popular project to date on HomeTalk is how I painted our kitchen cabinets last spring. I am blown away by the fact that it has been viewed over 43,000 times!

Do you stick to a strict posting schedule?
I try to stick to some what of a schedule for blogging. Every Wednesday at 4 p.m. central you can come over and find Treasure Hunt Thursday where you can link up your treasures and projects for the week. It is such a wonderful party and I am happy to see it steadily growing.
On Sundays you can find my series "How I Found My Style Sundays" where some fabulous bloggers stop by to share how they found their decorating style and some decorating tips.
Outside of those I go thru spurts where I am accomplishing many different projects and have a lot to share to like now where I am just busy organizing and cleaning the house and have nothing really to share.

How has blogging changed me?
Blogging has introduced me to a whole new world that I never knew that was out there. It has helped me find my style along the way which I have come to realize is rather eclectic. I have "met" so many wonderful ladies who have the same interest as I do. Some of them I have been fortunate enough to meet in person. Blogging has given me a dose of self confidence that I never had before and for that I am grateful. I have always been a quiet self reserved gal and blogging has helped me come out of my box tremendously! If you have ever thought about starting a blog I say go for it! You have nothing loose and it can take you on an adventure you never even imagined.

Thank you Mariam for giving me the "bloglight" today!:)

Hope to see everybody back her today 4 p.m central for Treasure Hunt Thursday #139.

How I Found My Style Sundays- must love junk

From My Front Porch To Yours- must love junk

Hi, everyone!  I'm Susan from 'must love junk' and I'm so excited that Pamela has asked me to be here!
I really enjoy this series, and I'm honored to be a part of it!

Come on in to my 1929 Colonial home...

From My Front Porch To Yours- must love junk

My home is an eclectic mix of styles.

In it you'll find a lot of rustic, some farmhouse and vintage, a touch of industrial and a little bit of whimsy thrown in for fun!

My style has really evolved over the last few years, even though I've always loved using vintage items in my decor.  To me they just have so much more character than anything shiny and new.

I think the most dramatic change in my decor was about 4 years ago.   I used to use a lot more color (think painted furniture in pinks and greens) and 'cottagy' accessories.  But when we had our carpet pulled up to reveal hardwood floors underneath and had them refinished in a dark stain, I was drawn to start replacing my pastel color scheme with more natural, rustic wood pieces and accessories in cream and brown tones.

I do still like a little green especially in our dining room where the walls are painted a pale celery color.

I've even recently started to add a touch of blue here and there!

(Blue even made it onto our back stoop at Christmas!)

I love to shop flea markets, antique shops, garage sales, and thrift stores.  I'm definitely a bargain hunter! I've gotten most of my decor at unbelievably low prices.  However, if I find something really unique or it's something that I truly can't live without then I'll occasionally splurge (like I did on this little unusual cabinet.)

My mom and I have a little shop called 'Home Sweet Home' so we're always on the hunt for great treasures.
The shop really comes in handy because I'm always swapping things out.  My hubby says that he never gets used to where something is because it probably won't be in the same spot for very long!

One of the most commented on pieces in my home is this huge, heavy coat rack. It came out of an old library and was given to us by my mom.
It's in our hallway and one of the few items that won't be going anywhere anytime soon! (This sucker is heavy!)

Another favorite is my stack of suitcases.  I've been collecting these babies for awhile now, and I never tire of them!

Anything rusty, well-worn, chippy, or weathered gets my heart beating faster!  The shabbier the better!
(Hence 'must love junk' :)

To create a beautiful, interesting home I recommend using things in unconventional ways, like I've done by hanging this old pair of shears.  To me that adds interest, and makes your space unique!

I love when I find a fun, quirky item like this menu board!  Again, adding these kind of things here and there keeps your decor from becoming too boring, and gives you a look that no one else has!

From My Front Porch To Yours- must love junk

Sometimes I like to add a touch of industrial, like here in my kitchen.  It mixes things up a little, and gives your decor a bit of an edge.

I have a lot of pieces that I love but my one of my very favorite finds is this industrial factory cart.  We use it as a coffee table in our sunroom.

It's extra special because it came from the company that my dad worked for for over 40 years!  He started as an apprentice and worked his way up to upper management.  When the company closed a few years ago there was an auction, and I was SO thrilled that my parents purchased this cart for us!

From My Front Porch To Yours- must love junk

Not only do I love the look of it, but it has sentimental value, too.

From My Front Porch To Yours- must love junk

I believe that if you buy what you truly love then it will all work together to create a space that makes you happy, and that reflects the true you.

From My Front Porch To Yours- must love junk

And isn't that what a home is all about?

From My Front Porch To Yours- must love junk

Thank you for joining me on this little tour of my home, and thanks again Pamela for having me! :)
I just love Susan's home and all of her amazing treasures! Thank you so much Susan for coming over today and sharing your style with us and giving us so many inspirational ides for our own homes.
