How I Found My Style Sundays- Let's Add Sprinkles

From My Front Porch To Yours- How I Found My Style Sundays

Hi everybody!
I'm thrilled to participate in this series. Thank you, Pamela.
I am Katie Let's Add Sprinkles.

Let's Add Sprinkles is primarily a decorating and diy blog but it is named for the annual cookie baking tradition started by my mother. I have fond memories of making and decorating sugar cookies with her. My children grew up baking and decorating with me.

Sprinkles just seem to make things better.

I believe a home is never finished because styles and trends are always changing. It doesn't need to cost an arm and a leg to keep a home up to date.
A sprinkling of something new and a few DIYs can transform a space.

I'm drawn to a variety of styles but they all have vintage or an antique bent. My style is a little bit country, farmhouse and cottage. I keep it fresh by changing colors, fabrics and finishes. I studied images until I figured out which type of look we wanted.
Lately, I have found freedom in paint. Much of the woodwork in our home has gotten a new look with oil based enamel.

The orange oak in our home has been banished and our house looks more in keeping with my style.
Once the orange was eradicated, I started painting furniture and no one is "rolling over in their grave" so to speak.
I came to the realization that painted furniture is in and out of style and while it is in, I'm going to enjoy it. I haven't a single museum quality piece so a little paint won't hurt.

I found my style by default.
My parents were antique collectors and DIYers.
I grew up with old stuff in an old house and so did my husband. It was what we were used to and comfortable with.

As newlyweds we didn't have the money in order to buy new furniture. We shopped garage sales and antique stores for inexpensive treasures.

As we were able, brand new items were brought into the mix.
While I prefer new upholstery, I've decided that I am most comfortable with older stuff. I love being able to move things from room to room in order to get a new look. New furniture doesn't offer me the same flexibility.
It is larger in scale and therefore not as versatile.

I would have to say that the little bed in our guest room is my most precious possession. It was my first bed after I graduated from the crib as a child. I usually had to share it with a sibling either two years older or two years younger until we were big enough for our own beds.
It fell apart a few times because it was just so fun to jump on.

I love this little bed. It was all handmade by my great, great grandfather.

It now sits in our newly redecorated guest room.

The best thing I ever did was learn how to paint.
Paint is cheap and it covers a multitude of ugly!

It's a little messy at first but it won't be as messy after some practice.

Don't be afraid to try a DIY.
So many things aren't difficult to do they just require patience and practice.
Thank you, Pamela.

  6. I enjoyed her home very much!! I too, love all the old and new mixed together.I am a big fan of painted furniture. I have been doing it for so long. I am one that will paint antiques because I want to live with what pleases me and not think about it losing it's value. After all, I want to love it while I have it!!
