From My Front Porch To Yours-How I Found My Style Sundays
Ya ever stop by a blog that just warms your heart, makes ya happy and inspires you with each and every visit? Today I am honored to be featuring Aunt Ruthie from Sugarpie Farmhouse. On June 3, 2008 I hit publish on my first blog post ever...before FMFPTY...and it is because I was so inspired by Aunt Ruthie. Her blog for me is one of those warms your heart, makes happy, and inspires ya kinda of blogs. I hope that y'all enjoy getting to know more about Aunt Ruthie's style as much as I have.

Howdy y'all! I'm Ruthie (aka Aunt Ruthie) from Sugar Pie Farmhouse. I'm tickled pink that dear, sweet, adorable Pamela asked me to share "How I Found My Style" with you today. I think this series is sooooo inspiring and I'm honored to be a part of it!

I have to say that decorating my home has always been a passion of mine. I love it because it's fun and it's the perfect creative outlet for me. But most of all I love decorating because I want to provide a cozy place, an "Ahh,-it's-good-to-be-home" kind of place for my hubby and kids. Being a mama of 4 and now a Grammy to 4, my goal has always been to create an atmosphere of love and warmth. I want my house to feel homey and joyful...a place my family wants to be.

What is your decorating style? My decorating style is All-American-Southern-Farmy. Yup, Farmy! I know that may sound silly, but it really is my style! Think of it this way; Farm + Homey + Happy = "Farmy"!   For me, It's all about celebrating and preserving the best from the past from down-on-the-farm, when life was simpler and sweet as fresh churned butter. "Farmy" is down-home...it's homemade pie cooling on the windowsill...sun faded aprons hangin' on a hook...squeaky screen doors...rocking chairs on the front porch...family meals 'round the kitchen table...things that are white washed and scrubbed clean...well worn tables, that if they could talk, would have endearing stories to tell. Farmy also has a few chickens and cows thrown in too! I love anything that looks like it came fresh off an old farm! "Farmy" is comforting and nurturing. It says "Welcome! Come on in darlin'...sit yourself down, everything's gonna be alright...have some pie!" I live in Southern Missouri, way out in the country, and although I don't live on a working farm, I still love to incorporate farmy goodness into my home and life. For now I'm a farmgirl at heart and so my home reflects that. (The photo above is my baking center / pantry with a pass through window.)

Vintage milk-glass, milk bottles, white enamelware, old silverware...and pie are on the top of my list!

Inside the pantry, through the squeaky farmhouse screen door is my itty bitty "General Store".

How did you find your style? I would have to say that I've always loved country style. Years ago my style was more like "Country Clutter" but as time has gone by I've decided I want a much simpler look. I'm still working on that. :D

Here is our kitchen/Great-room. It truly is the heart of our home.

What has been your most treasured find for your home? So far, my favorite find is the Cedar Hill Farm sign that sits above my great-room fireplace mantle. When I saw it I thought to myself, this is coming home with Mama! I found it at a local flea market here in the Ozarks for $25. I love that it was homemade. The letters are clearly hand cut and nailed to weathered-white barn boards. It came with a sleepy fuzzy caterpillar curled up in the "a". I found a better home for him. :D

Since the sign is quite heavy it pretty much stays right there, so I just decorate around it for each season.

What tips do you have for creating a beautiful home? I really think it starts with our mindset. It's a privilege to be a homemaker! To make warm and cheerful the place that we call home. To bless our loved ones with a cozy atmosphere. A beautiful home starts with love. Fill it with the kinds of things you love...to hug the hearts of those you love. I think when we take the time to beautify our home by keeping it clean and adding our special homey touches it sends a message of love to our family. A message that will warm their hearts all their life. How wonderful is that?! Another tip is to celebrate life in each season through our decorating! I'm so thankful God gave us four seasons in which to add fresh joy and beauty into our homes. On my blog, Sugar Pie Farmhouse, I love opening up my home to share my Fall Home Tour and my Christmas Home Tour. Decorating for Spring, Summer, Fall and Christmas just makes a home look and feel happy. All 4 kids of mine have told me how wonderful and magical it was coming home from school to find that I'd started decorating the house for the holidays. I love that they loved that!!

Another tip that's so simple but adds such coziness is lamplight! It's not as harsh on the eyes as overhead lighting can sometimes be. I also like pink lightbulbs, especially in the bedroom. Even though they are "pink" they don't really look pink when turned on, they just create a warm homey, glow. Creating a beautiful home is more than pretty furnishings it's creating a happy home atmosphere. Light candles, so your home smells yummy. Play music that's fun and uplifting or soothing and peaceful. Keep things tidy as best as you can. Keep a song in your heart and a sweet smile on your face! A happy mama makes a beautiful home!

I also love creating little vignettes...little scenes that tell a story. Chickens and eggs...waiting for Springtime.

  11. Ruthie's home reminds me of the home that many bloggers talk about, their mama's home or grandma's home, where they learned to cook and bake side by side with them. Well, she shows that this can be recreated!! So Hello, Ruthie...invite me over and let's make a pie! :)

    XO,
    Jane
