Hi Everyone! I'm Jennifer from
Town and Country Living and am so happy to be here at "From My Front Porch to Yours" to share a little bit about myself and my decorating style. Thank you so much Pam, for inviting me to participate in "How I Found My Style Sundays!"
Even before I moved out of my parent's home and into my own place many years ago, I had an attraction to architecture and decorating. And while my style has evolved and changed over the years, two things remain constant ...
I love light and airy ... and I love older homes. †My home is my refuge from the world, so it needs to lift my spirits. And since I raised 3 children and have a few kitty cats, it also has to be practical and livable.
My style is a mix of farmhouse and cottage with a hint of Scandinavian influence running through it. My very first home had more of a contemporary Asian theme, but then my sister introduced me to country style decor and that changed everything!
I found I love the simple and organic vibe that comes from country style decorating. I subscribed to Country Living magazine and never looked back! I've even kept many issues from years past and yes, I do still look at them for inspiration from time to time!
I tend to prefer the cottage-style of country living †rather than the more rustic, primitive style.
My home was built circa 1875 and it has all these great windows in it! It also has the wide baseboards and trim that you don't typically see in newer construction. I lived in a new house once and didn't like it at all. It's just not for me. I guess I just love the charm of an older home.
Over the years I've learned it's best to let a room "speak" to me before I decorate it. My dining room has had several different colors of wall paint ... yellow, sage, even pink! I couldn't get the look right because I wasn't listening to it. Finally my gut told me to go with a cool, light color and it now wears Steamed White by Laura Ashley (you can find it at Lowes).
I enjoy marrying the interior decor of a home to its architectural style. †Which is probably another reason why I like older homes. I wouldn't know how to decorate a contemporary home!
Part of what makes a house a home is infusing your personal style into each and every room. The easiest way to do this is to collect and display things you love ... like my collection of white ironstone seen here in my kitchen.
I just adore white ironstone and display it in both my kitchen and dining room. Tip: Group like items and/or colors together when displaying objects for greater visual impact.
I also love vintage mirrors and bottles, seen here in the family room during the
Christmas season. The mirrors help to bounce light around the room, which helps create the light and airy style that I love.
And finally, one of my proudest moments in decorating was repainting one of our
claw foot tubs! I love the way it turned out and it helps to make this windowless bathroom light and bright.
Thanks again for letting me share my style with all of you! Hopefully you've found some ideas and inspiration.
