Change Is Good

So do you notice anything different around here!?;)
I have been doing a little sprucing up. I decided that it was time for a blog makeover and I am so glad I did! Karen from Valentine Designs did a fabulous job creating my new header, sidebar tags, adding social media tags, and making my new blog button!! You may already know Karen from her blog My Desert Cottage. I highly recommend her!Other than wanting the blog to have some pizazz I also wanted to make it more functional for my visitors. As mentioned you can now find my Social Media Tabs in the upper right hand corner of the blog. All you have to do is click on them and they take you to my other pages like FaceBook and HomeTalk.
I also had Karen add a hovering Pin It button to all the pictures on my blog because I know we are all addicted to Pinterest! So if you see a pic you want to Pin just put your mouse over that pic and click on the P. It is that simple now!:)

I hope that you like all the new changes as much as I do. I will be working on adding a Home Tour tab up at the top so stay tuned and Karen will be updating a few other buttons for me like "How I Found My Style Sundays".

Before I go I wanted to let you know to hop on over to this gals blog!
This is Kris from Junk Chic Cottage and she asked me to be a part of her Saturday series "Life Behind The Blogger". Thank you Kris for having me over today!

Also believe it or not the runner up for the Folky Art Candles did not claim their prize so that means I have chosen yet another winner. Congrats to Vicki Baggett Malick! Vicki I am sending you an email PLEASE claim your prize. Pretty Please!:) You have till the end of Monday.
I hope everybody has a wonderful weekend and see ya back here tomorrow for "How I Found My Style Sundays"!

Fall Dining Room 2013

It took me a little while but I finally finished decorating for fall in the dining room. I was torn between decking it out for Halloween or just going traditional. I chose traditional.
Welcome to our Fall Dining Room 2013!
I use these little votive candle holders every year. They belonged to my grandmother.
Hope you enjoyed your visit!

George & Martha

Last week I went to visit George & Martha. They were looking for a new home and I thought that our home would possibly be a good fit. After visiting with them I decided that they HAD to come and live with us.

Come on upstairs and meet George & Martha.
Did you guess George & Martha Washington? George & Martha are Chromolithographed portraits by E. C. Middleton. Their previous owner had inherited them from her mother in law. She said that she has a house full of antiques and her children are not interested in any of them so she has started to sell things off. I scored George & Martha for just $50.
Check out those eyes! The Hubster thinks they are creepy.
They appear to be in their original frames and glass.
Can you see the date on there? It says 1864! I could not believe that I had found portraits that are 149 years old. I can only imagine the stories they hold and the homes that they have hung in and now I have the honor of hanging them in ours.
Martha is not in as good of shape as George but if you were almost 150 years old I am sure you would be a little rough around the edges as well. I was thinking of touching her frame up but after doing some research I have decided to leave her just as she is.

How I Found My Style Sundays- The Wood Grain Cottage

Hi there! I'm Shayna from The Wood Grain Cottage and I'm so excited to be here today! When Pamela asked if I wanted to be apart of "How I Found My Style Sunday's", I was giddy! After all, this is a subject that's near and dear to my heart, and I'm sure many of yours as well.

Shayna | The Wood Grain Cottage
So how did I find my style? Through trial and error. I started playing around with a few of the things, colors and finishes that I loved until I found a combination that suited both my husband and I. After all, we both live in our home and it should feel like ours. Not just mine.

To this day, I consider his like's and dislike's when I'm choosing something for our home. And I only buy things that I love!

But now, that I've really found the style that we love, I can truly see our home through a new light. And I'm taking my time with it. Rather than just rushing out and buying things, I'm filling our home with items that we love. Items that speak to us. And we're also injecting plenty of our cottage-y, farmhouse-y, industrial-ish, rustic-y vibe into each room where inspiration strikes!

That's our style: cottage-y, farmhouse-y, industrial-ish and rustic-y. Some term, huh? But we're a bit of that all rolled into one. I don't just love cottage. And I don't just love farmhouse. Or industrial. Or rustic. But all mixed together, we love it. Our blog name is true to our style: The Wood Grain Cottage. It was named after my love for cottage design and my husband's everlasting love for wood grain. Together it fits.

And now we're implementing that one step, or room, at a time!

I've found the easiest way to do that, is to just start doing

I picked a small room to start. Our laundry room still isn't finished, but I'm head over heels in love with the direction it's taking.... and it's set the stage for what we want our entire home to feel like.

And along the way, I love to make a few things of my own, like this farmhouse laundry room light

But my most treasured finds aren't things. This house wouldn't be a home without my husband. As we've grown in our home, and as a couple, I see the many projects that we've completed together. That makes my heart happy. Do I love things? Yes! Especially home things. But are they my most treasured items? No. I treasure the HOME we've built together.
